AUA & Mentor Graphics Collaboration

Partnership: Mentor Graphics

Project Description

The American University of Armenia (AUA) has maintained a long-term strategic research collaboration with Mentor Graphics, now Siemens Digital Industries Software, since 2012. The partnership has focused on advancing research and technology development in electronic design automation (EDA), integrated circuit (IC) design, semiconductor manufacturing, machine learning and computational modelling. Through jointly funded research projects, AUA faculty, researchers, students and Siemens engineers collaborated to develop innovative solutions to real-world engineering challenges. The collaboration combines academic excellence with industrial expertise, promoting technology transfer, scientific innovation and workforce development, while providing students with valuable research and internship opportunities.

Project Objectives

  • Establish a sustainable university-industry partnership in advanced semiconductor and EDA research.
  • Conduct collaborative research addressing practical challenges in IC design, chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP), circuit analysis, data compression, machine learning and Bayesian modelling.
  • Develop scalable algorithms and innovative computational methods that improve Siemens’ EDA technologies and product development.
  • Foster student engagement through participation in research projects and industry internships.
  • Produce high-quality scientific publications and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.
  • Strengthen research capacity, promote knowledge exchange and prepare highly qualified graduates for careers in the global semiconductor and software industries.

Project Results

  • long-term collaboration between AUA and Mentor Graphics/Siemens, which was extended for an additional six years in 2022;
  • completed multiple collaborative research projects covering CMP pressure calculation, deposition process modelling, machine learning, Bayesian frameworks, data compression, mechanical stress modelling, calibration and circuit analysis;
  • published four peer-reviewed journal and conference papers contributing to the scientific advancement of semiconductor manufacturing and EDA technologies.
  • active participation of AUA faculty and students in industry-driven research, providing hands-on experience with real-world engineering challenges.
