Project Description
Launched in October 2019 by the American University of Armenia (AUA), Zaven P. & Sonia Akian College of Science and Engineering (ACSE) Engineering, the STEMGen program focused on improving the teaching of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects through modern teaching methods. Throughout its implementation, the program supported the development of educational resources and assessment tools including lesson plans, observation questionnaires and teaching and learning assessment materials. It also promoted teaching approaches that simulated professional activities to encourage students’ interest in STEM-related careers.
Implemented in partnership with the U.S. Embassy and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia, the program worked toward aligning its educational resources with the new STEM curriculum and subject standards. Through these efforts, the program expanded its reach across all regions of Armenia and supported teachers in strengthening their instructional practices in accordance with the New State Curriculum and STEM subject standards.
Project Objectives
- Improve the teaching of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects through modern teaching methods.
- Integrate the program’s resource creation processes, tools, systems and assessment approaches into the systems implemented by state institutions.
- Develop new educational materials, lesson plans, observation questionnaires and teaching and learning assessment materials.
- Create tools, enabling teachers to conduct lessons and promote students’ interest in STEM-related careers.
- Support the development of new processes for designing assessment materials for ongoing student learning.
Project Results
- The program engaged 300 teachers and 1,500 students across all regions of Armenia; more than 100 teachers developed 1,800 lesson plans, which were tested through both face-to-face and online classes.
- New educational materials, lesson plans, observation questionnaires, teaching and learning assessment materials were developed.
- The program advanced the integration of its resources, tools, systems and assessment processes into state education systems.
- The developed materials were incorporated into the teacher training program and the list of educational materials aligned with the new STEM curriculum.
